Clara Barton wanted to pursue other things in life now that her brother was back to good health During the civil war Clara Barton sought to help the soilders in any way she could. At the beginning she collected and distributed supplies for the union army. Not content on sitting on the sidelines Barton served as an independent nurse and first saw combat in Fredericksburg, Virginia in 1862. Clara showed compassion toward the soilders saving their lives and nursing them back to health. Risking her own life to save others.
After the war ended in 1865 Clara worked for the war department reuniting missing soilders with their families. Although Clara was away from her own family she continued o show compassion in putting other before her own feelings of home sickness.
First Aid Wagon
In 1881 Clara Barton became the president of The American Red Cross. As their leader Clara Barton over saw assitance and relief work for the victims of such disasters as the johnstown flood in 1889 and the flood in Galveston in 1990. Clara resigned from her position in 1904. She still went around and spoke to people about her experiences
